Blending jazz, soul, experimental electronic music and singer-songwriter influences, Momoko is an adventurous and deeply personal record that refuses to settle into a single genre. Gill draws on her background as a self-taught drummer, producer and vocalist to create music built around instinct, rhythm and richly layered arrangements.
Featuring standout tracks including "No Others," "Heavy," "Rewind/Remind," "Shadowboxing," "River" and "Ineffably," the album moves from jazz-infused grooves and delicate harmonies to darker electronic experimentation. "When Palestine Is Free" expands into an extraordinary 50-person choir featuring musicians including Shabaka Hutchings, Soweto Kinch, Alabaster DePlume, Coby Sey and Marysia Osu.
The album was produced by Momoko Gill, recorded at London's Total Refreshment Centre, mixed by Matthew Herbert and mastered by Alex Gordon at Abbey Road Studios, bringing together an impressive collection of contemporary UK jazz and experimental influences.
